Bone Grafts Can Help Improve Your Dental Health

Reasons For a Dental Bone Graft14025-cta2

Bone grafting is a pretty common procedure, and it’s often just one step in your comprehensive dental treatment plan. Dental bone grafts are most often done after an extraction or loss of a tooth due to injury, disease, or neglect. In many cases, the jawbone below a missing or removed tooth isn’t strong enough to support a dental implant in the future due to loss of bone mass. They may also be done when there is a loss of bone mass in the jaw due to illness or injury even though there hasn’t been a tooth extraction.

Benefits of Bone Graft Surgery

Your extraction will heal faster.

Bone grafts can actually help the site of your tooth extraction heal faster. It helps the surrounding tissues stay in place and prevents collapse. The bone graft also stimulates your body’s natural tissue growth, replacing the graft with your own tissues over time.

It prepares your mouth for a dental implant.

Dental implants require enough bone density in the jawline to keep the implant firmly held in place. If there isn’t enough bone there, a dental implant might not be possible without the use of a bone graft.

What to Expect During a Bone Graft Appointment

Bone grafts are a safe and painless procedure that can be done in our office. We graft a piece of bone onto the area that requires more bone density. You’ll be made very comfortable during this procedure, and because our dental practice has performed numerous surgeries like this, we’ll work quickly to complete the bone graft without sacrificing the quality of your care. One the graft is in place, we’ll monitor its progress through periodic visits. Your body will naturally stimulate bone growth in the area of the graft, so the “placeholder” bone will eventually be replaced by your own bone tissue. It can take around nine months for the graft to be completely healed. If you experience any unusual pain or symptoms, you should contact our dental care team immediately. However, most of our bone graft patients recover with no issues.

What Happens Next

One your bone graft is completely healed, we can move onto the next stage of your treatment plan. For many of our patients, that means a dental implant. We’ll let you know if the graft has been successful enough for a dental implant, and if it has, we’ll get started on the process right away. No matter what the next step might be, though, we can guarantee that our team will take terrific care of you every step of the way and help you create a beautiful smile.
