Here at Concord Smile, your trusted source for general dentistry in Concord, we hear a lot of different myths and misconceptions walk through our doors. From minor to more serious misconceptions, we’ve compiled a few of the most common to finally shed some light on the truth.

  1. If you don’t feel any pain, there’s nothing wrong with your teeth. If you only visit the dentist when you feel pain, is only going to result in more pain: both in your mouth and to your wallet. Prevention through regular dental visits to our office is the best way to ensure that you don’t have a toothache or that you don’t have to shell out hundreds of dollars for a painful root canal. Plus, some more serious issues like oral cancer may not appear to have symptoms until it’s really bad.
  2. Dental X-rays are harmful to you. Some people with lots of dental health problems, or who are at high risk for cavities may need more frequent X-rays. And with some patients who don’t historically have dental health problems, the need for x-rays is less frequent. More often than not, the only way to diagnose a dental health issue is with an X-ray.
  3. You should rinse your mouth out with water after you brush your teeth. A long time ago, this was thought to be true. Fortunately, we now know better. The better practice here is: spit, don’t rinse. Toothpaste contains a lot of helpful ingredients that protect your teeth – why would you want to rinse all of that away?
